Kush Audio UBK Fatso Review
I just got done listening to the UBK Fatso for the first time, and I am quite in love. I had heard the original Empircal Labs Fatso and was impressed, but never dug it quite as much as their distressor. By their own admission, they were meant to be very different boxes, so it wasn’t a huge surprise that I had different feelings towards each. I’m a bit more blue collar when it comes to compression. I like compressors to be obvious, to add color, and to be very vibey. When I engage a compressor, I don’t want to search for the subtleties, or to not be able to hear it working. I want to hear it working, and hear my tracks get smashed into the ground.
Of course I’ll throw out there that I can certainly appreciate a more transparent compression, and for some sources, it is just the ticket. What I’m referring to here is buss compression, or a situation where I’m trying to add some vintage sauce to a track. Think anything indie rock, or kind of folky. If you want some trash, then this box is it. You don’t even have to pay attention to the buttons that you’re pressing, as each of them sounds great in its own way.
Listening to it on a drum buss, it thickened things up, added some beef to the snare, and smeared a nice layer of glue across the entire kit. Suddenly the drums felt more alive, and just seemed more interesting. Lots of color is the name of this game. To check out some of the features and functions on this box, go here.
One thing worth noting is that these are not a new build, these are modded. Kush audio buys fatso’s from Empirical Labs and mods them out to meet their own twisted desires. Everything is legit though, the boxes still carry a full warranty, and this new design is signed off on and blessed by EL. In fact they gave Kush the schematics of the Fatso personally, so that they could make these. Pretty interesting back story. Take a look, and a listen here.
Until Next Time
